By now I’m sure you’re all aware that I’m pregnant with baby number two, due June 28th. I have to keep double-checking this date to make sure that I have it right… With Lila I could have told you how many hours and minutes until I was due, and this time around I can hardly get the month right. #secondchildproblems Last week we FINALLY went for the anatomy scan and found out the gender! The baby gender reveal threw us me for a loop and now we’re scrapping the awesome idea that we had and are back to the drawing board for choosing a baby name!
The first time around we found out gender around 16 weeks, so I was super bummed when I went in for my 16 week appointment this time around and all they did was measure me. Um, I could have told you that my belly is growing and saved myself a trip. I want to see that baby squiggling around in there and know how to decorate this nursery! But alas, I had to wait four more weeks. It turns out that it was good timing and so nice to have a happy doctor’s appointment planned after all of the not-so-fun ones with Lane recently.
Last Friday was the big day. (Big as in my belly size.)
This was the wonderful part when she was checking all of the organs and brain and legs and arms… everything looked perfect! There was the ultrasound tech and someone training in the room, and the tech doing the ultrasound was kinda showing off for the trainee. When the baby wasn’t in the right position she would punch around on my stomach and it pissed me off a little bit. I also thought “lady I’ve lost practically all control of body functions below where you’re pressing that thing, so go ahead and slam if you want to.”
Leading up to this day I have been 100% convinced that this is a boy. This pregnancy has been quite different and the way the baby is sitting is so different too. I hadn’t even bothered to think about girl names, or doing another girl nursery. Lane, from day one, said girl.
So much for my “motherly intuition”, because Slammy McSlammerson soon confirmed, no doubt about it, we’re having another girl!
Is it terrible if I say that at very first I may have been just a teeeeeeensy bit disappointed? Not only did I have the PERFECT boy name, but also I thought it might be kinda nice to have at least one of our children love me like Lila loves Lane. I was convinced that a Mama’s boy was the answer. I was incorrect.
I got over it in about two seconds though when I thought about how sweet Lila will be as a big sister. They can brush each others hair and share secrets, talk about boys, and paint each other’s nails. So sweet! (This is how it goes in my idealist pregnant mind right now, so to the moms that have girls pulling each other’s hair out, please don’t ruin it for me at this point!) Anyway, I can completely see us as parents of two sweet girls and it just feels right.
Everyone we’ve told so far has said, “well think of all the money you’ll save on clothes!” To which I reply, yes, I guess we can apply that to the second wedding for which we will have to pay?! And when I said to Lane “oh my gosh two girls sharing that bathroom!”, his ever-pragmatic and optimistic response was, “well at least they won’t have to worry about someone leaving the seat up.” He’s always looking on the bright side, and I bet he’s never even fallen in a toilet in the middle of the night when someone does leave the seat up.
So now on to plans for a baby girl nursery and choosing a name! We had chosen the name Levi for a boy and I STILL CALL IT in case this turns out to be a boy and/or we have twins, and/or an accidental pregnancy down the road! (Guarantee Lane just passed out after that last sentence.) Levi is Hebrew for “joined in harmony” – how perfect for a little one joining our family?! And in the Bible, Levi is the third son of Jacob. Levi was also Matthew’s name before he became Jesus’s apostle. And I’ll spare you the details, but Matthew was the name of the hurricane we were following on a cruise ship when this little baby came to be. This name was like kismet, and a big part of the reason I was convinced we were having a boy. Plus, it’s SO cute with Lila. Lila and Levi. Sigh.
We have a few prelim ideas for girl names. Criteria are that it has to be cute with Lila, has to be different (of course) but not too weird, and I’d like it if it started with an “L” or “K” or k sound, because I’m into alliteration like that. SO, suggestions?!
Thank you as always for stopping by to read about our adventures. All of your sweet thoughts, e-mails, messages and comments mean more to me than I can say. Happy Valentine’s Day! Or as I am referring to it… Taco Tuesday! Mmmm tacos…. Can’t wait to hear your name suggestions!

I had a dream where Ryan told me that you posted a picture of Lila and Abigail online. I know that doesn’t follow _any_ of your above rules, but my subconscious has an opinion (apparently). So excited for you both! How people get through life without a sister, I’ll never know. My heart bursts with love for you + your fam.

God bless Lane for his positive outlook! I also guarantee he’s never fallen into a toilet bowl because it’s a scar one doesn’t easily forget. 😉 I love the story of the boy name you guys had queued up! So fun and such a great story! I’m sure you’ll come up with something equally as boss for baby girl #2 (maybe another L name, wink wink? 😉 because you guys are creative and thoughtful. Much love! XOXO k-dawg
